Supporting Black African Mothers Across Merseyside

Workshops Focused on Pre and Postpartum Depression

Helping women understand the signs, symptoms, emotional challenges, and available support during pregnancy and after childbirth

At Ubuntu Birth and Bereavement Companions CIC, we are committed to empowering and supporting Black African mothers and families through education, awareness, and culturally appropriate community support.

We have successfully conducted a series of workshops focused on pre and postpartum depression in Black African mothers, helping women understand the signs, symptoms, emotional challenges, and available support during pregnancy and after childbirth. These workshops create safe spaces for mothers to share experiences, reduce isolation, and promote positive maternal mental health and wellbeing.

Ubuntu has also delivered educational sessions on understanding the UK maternity system, supporting mothers and families to confidently navigate antenatal care, labour and birth services, postnatal care, health visitor services, and patients’ rights within the healthcare system. Many migrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking mothers have benefited from this guidance and culturally sensitive support.

In addition, we have facilitated parenting workshops aimed at strengthening parenting skills, improving family wellbeing, and encouraging healthy child development. These sessions provide practical guidance on communication, emotional support, child behaviour, bonding, and creating nurturing home environments.

Through our workshops, Ubuntu continues to build a supportive community where no mother faces pregnancy, childbirth, motherhood, or loss alone.
